Storage

Storage Options

Maybe you need to store your belongings for a week before you get possession of your new home or maybe you have too much stuff and don’t want to deal with the clutter.  In any case, there are some great storage solutions available.

Self-storage units

There are a few things to consider when deciding which storage company, you’d like to rent from.

Security
You’ll want to make sure that the storage units have proper security in place.  This security may include:

  • Alarm systems
  • 24 hour video surveillance
  • Sprinkler systems
  • Personalized access codes

Location
You will want to choose a storage facility that is convenient for you to get to.

Access
Make sure that you can access your unit during hours that are convenient for you.

Temperature controlled
Some storage units will control the temperature of the units to keep them from getting too hot or cold. Depending on what you plan on storing, this may be important to you.

Mobile Storage containers or pods

There are a number of companies that now provide mobile storage solutions which can be very helpful during a move or renovation.

How they work
You will get a container delivered to home for you to pack your stuff into at your own leisure.  When your done packing they will come and pick up the container.  The container can then be delivered to your new home for you to unpack, again at your own leisure.  These companies will also take your stuff to a secure storage yard for temporary storage if you are not able to move into your new home right away.

Pro tip – storage companies carry commercial insurance but that WILL NOT cover your belongings.  Speak with your home insurance provider to find out if your home insurance will cover your belongings during storage.  Sometimes your home insurance will cover temporary storage of your belongings, but you may need to purchase extra insurance depending on the length of time your contents will be in storage.
